What Color Hair Does Jennifer Lopez Have
This summer, Jennifer Lopez turns 50. To commemorate the multi-hyphenate's birthday on July 24th, we're counting down with 50 Days of J.Lo, a celebration of the woman who's shown us all by example how to be ageless—inside and out.
Jennifer Lopez is the queen of sexy red carpet fashion, looking forever youthful, and rocking that fabulous honey blonde hair color. Since ditching her naturally dark brown hair over 20 years ago, Lopez has been sporting different variations of a golden brown with blonde highlights for years.
But there's good news for fans of her warm hair tones: According to James Corbett, Clairol Color Director and owner of James Corbett Studio in New York City, it's a color that would work for most skin tones.
"It's important not to go too light with the base color," he says. "The lightness and the beautiful sandy tone of J.Lo's hair comes from the color of the highlights and how they lay upon the base color of her hair,"
Before you head in with a picture of Lopez and ask your stylist for the exact same color, keep in mind that your services should vary depending on the existing base color of your hair. Now, read on for how you can achieve Lopez's hair color.
How can I get Jennifer Lopez's hair color?
Like mentioned above, your coloring process will depending on the current color of your hair.
"If somebody has virgin hair on a blonde color level, I would start with fresh blonde highlights and color the rest of the hair with a warm beige, gold dark blonde," Linda de Zeeuw, Master stylist and colorist at Rob Peetoom salon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, says.
de Zeeuw adds that the steps for somebody with dark hair are a totally different story. "You would have to lift up the base color so you can achieve three shades of light with a permanent hair color—but if you need to go even lighter than that we're looking at a full-on lightening service. After that, you can create a beautiful new dark blonde base color in combination with highlights," she says.

Once you've colored your hair, expect to see regrowth at the root start to appear after six weeks or so. The highlights, on the other hand, might have to be redone every three months, de Zeeuw says.
Corbett recommends staying within two levels of your natural hair color if you're trying to achieve a look similar to Lopez's.
"The lighter and the farther you go from your natural hair color, the more difficult it is to irradiate these unwanted brassy [gold, orange, and red] tones. The key is to be careful with your base color, and then add highlights to achieve that pop and glow," he says.
How can I try it at home?

SB2 Ultra Light Cool Blonde Kit
Both de Zeeuw and Corbett recommend making an appointment if you need to change your entire base hair color, especially to get results like Lopez's. But if you want to retouch your highlights, Corbett suggests using the Clairol Nice 'N Easy SB2 in Ultra Light Cool Blonde to get a few lighter strands.
"Remember, when trying to highlight at home, less is more. You can take this shade and carefully isolate some strands in the face frame and in other parts of the head," he says.
Corbett also adds that you should start from the mid-shaft down to the ends, and process for the time stated in the instructions. "Be careful not to get it all over the head, as this is only meant for a few strands to achieve that pop of color," he says. "You can always add more once you get comfortable working with isolated strands as opposed to a full head application."
How do I maintain the health of my hair after coloring it?
After getting your hair done, de Zeeuw recommends maintaining it by using a haircare line that's especially created for color-treated hair—and use a hair mask after shampooing once a week.
"To protect your color during the day, I recommend you use a leave-in treatment with a UV protector in damp hair," she says. "And for extra care, you can book an in-salon deep conditioning haircare treatment with every service."
